On Monday, August 23rd, 2021, the much anticipated Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer was released. ***Spoiler warning*** It gave the first look at the titular hero on the run, teaming up with Dr. Strange, and accidentally causing a the rift in the multiverse leading to the return of classic villains such as Doc Ock.
It was extremely well received it broke the record for most viewed trailer within 24 hours at 355.5 million views! Such a record drew the attention of Spider Man actor Tom Holland and he tweeted it.
It got me thinking if this hype surrounding the new Spider-Man movie will translate to monetary success.
I found the top 10 movies whose trailers had the highest amount of views within 24 hours. I compared those top movies with their success at the box office the first night of release.

I found some interesting insights from it. As you can see only 3 of the following top 10 movies made more dollars from opening night than views they received on the trailer that first day of release. 2 of those movies are the highly successful Marvel blockbusters Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. More surprising to me is the least highest viewed trailer from our list the 2017 live action release of Beauty and the Beast.
The rest of the following movies did not exceed their trailer view count by gross box office returns from opening night.
Also demonstrated on this graph is the disappointing 2020 release of Mulan not to theaters but solely through Disney+ due to the pandemic. The movie ranked 6th highest viewed trailer within 24 hours at 175 million views, yet gross returns even from the entire opening weekend did not exceed its initial trailer views. It is definitely interesting to see how Disney learned from this experience and is now simultaneously releasing its blockbusters in theaters and streaming. We’ll see if this new direction has additional repercussions especially in light of the Scarlett Johansson lawsuit.
So while Spider Man No Way Home will likely be a smashing success for Sony pictures, history tells us it may or be guaranteed to continue its record breaking streak at the opening night box office returns.
